Albatross Tracking Data

In our efforts to better understand the distribution and foraging range of New Zealand albatross species, Fisheries New Zealand and the Department of Conservation tracked 75 Antipodean and Gibson's wandering albatross (starting January 2019) in real time. In addition to these, data from 14 Salvin's albatross (with data starting from October 2018) are also available.

Daily locational data from GPS and Argos transmitters are uploaded to a series of dedicated satellites, before being downloaded to a wildlife tracking service in France. The data received are groomed to remove any anomalous positions and processed to calculate speed and distance travelled. After being loaded into the Shiny App the data are displayed graphically and species, age class, and sex subsets can be applied. The application allows for data to be downloaded and used externally for further investigation.
