TYPE (of track) Definition/reason

4WD 4WD vehicle accessible

Accessway Roading through path

Shared Use Shared with other types of users, pedestrians, bikes, cars, horses

Mountain Bike Track Used for mountain biking and will have mountain bike classification/grade applied

Road Section Section of track network on street/road/footpath network, usually connecting major walkways e.g. Northern Walkway

Walking Track Used for walking and will have walking track classification applied

Walking Track Classification Definition/reason

Path Well formed, easy walking, suitable for all ages and most fitness levels. Access on durable surface (concrete, chip seal, asphalt, compacted gravel etc)

Short Walk Short Walks shall be well formed and provide for up to one hour’s easy walking suitable for most ages and fitness levels

Walking Track Walking Tracks cater for those who want an extended walk that takes from a few minutes to one full-day return. These tracks are usually reasonably easy day trips and are required to be of a standard to enable use by relatively inexperienced visitors with a low level of backcountry skill and wanting a low level of risk

Tramping Track Tramping Tracks generally follow the lie of the land and are commonly not formed and cater for including trampers, hunters etc. A few may be suitable for mountain-bikers as well as pedestrians

Route Routes are generally unformed and lightly cut and cater for experienced backcountry users who have navigation and river-crossing skills

Mountain Bike Track Classification Definition/reason

Beginner Also known as Grade 1 - Fairly flat, wide, smooth track or gravel road

Easy Also known as Grade 2 - Mostly flat with some gentle climbs on smooth track with easily avoidable obstacles such as rocks and potholes.

Intermediate Also known as Grade 3 - Steep slopes and/or avoidable obstacles possibly on narrow track and/or with poor traction. There may be exposure at the track’s outside edge.

Advanced Also known as Grade 4 - A mixture of long, steep climbs, narrow track, poor traction and obstacles that are difficult to avoid or jump over. Generally exposed at the track’s outside edge. Most riders will find some sections easier to walk.

Expert Also known as Grade 5 - Technically challenging. Giant climbs, narrow track and numerous hazards including dangerous drop-offs, sharp corners and difficult obstacles. Expect walking and possibly bike carrying.

Extreme Also known as Grade 6 - Downhill/free ride specific tracks. Extremely steep sections with large drop-offs and other unavoidable obstacles. May include man made structures and jumps.

4WD – Shared Use Wide 4WD or gravel vehicle track - usually shared with service vehicles

Single Track - Bike Priority Single track or singletrack is a narrow mountain biking trail that is approximately the width of the bike. Bikes have priority over other users.

Single Track - Shared Use Single track or singletrack is a narrow shared use/mountain biking trail that is approximately the width of the bike.

Downhill Usually a steep, rough single track terrain that often features jumps, drops, rock gardens and other obstacles.
