The map shows the CDEM-recommended evacuation zone in the event of a ‘Long’ (1 minute or longer) or ‘Strong’ (difficulty standing up) for the Hawke’s Bay Region. The evacuation zone, shown in blue, is the area that people should leave immediately following a long or strong earthquake. People should not wait for any alerts or announcements and should evacuate on foot wherever possible. The use of a single blue zone is in accordance with the latest national guidelines and best practices. The extent of the zone is based on computer modelling described in the GNS/EQC report available at:https://www.hbemergency.govt.nz/assets/Documents/Hazard-Reference-Documents/4616-AM1403-Hawkes-BayTsunami-Inundation-by-Attenuation-Rule.pdfOther evacuation zones are based on better quality data (e.g. Level 3 LiDAR data), better computer models and processing power. This map came into effect and made publicly available on October 10, 2024 and supersedes and replaces all previous tsunami evacuation zones.
