- All included claims are accepted for cover.
- Claims managed by an accredited employer are not included as we hold limited data about these.
- Claims are identified as climbing related either where:
- the sport is Mountaineering,
- the accident description includes the keywords rock climb, sport climb, free climb, indoor climb, bouldering, climbing wall, climbing gym or climbing centre with some allowance for spelling.
- The accident description is a free text field on the ACC45 claim lodgement form (which is not mandatory to complete) where a client can provide a brief description of how their accident happened. Where this field is completed, there is a significant variance in the level and accuracy of detail provided. Therefore, data provided based on a search of this field should be considered indicative only.
- Age is the client's age at accident date.
- Region is the location of the accident and not necessarily where the client resides or sought treatment.
- Diagnosis and injury site is based on the primary injury. A claim may include multiple injuries but any additional injuries have been excluded from this dataset.
- ACC ethnicity data is prioritised, meaning that a claim can only have one ethnicity based on their selections on the ACC45 claim lodgement form. A maximum of six ethnicities can be chosen by the client but the system prioritises these where Māori, regardless of other ethnicities are classified as Māori, Pacific Peoples with any other responses other than Māori are classified as Pacific; Asian peoples with any other response other than Māori and Pacific are classified as Asian and Other Ethnicity regardless of any other response other than Māori, Pacific or Asian are classified as Other. Those that listed European and did not list Māori, Pacific, Asian or Other are classified as European. Residual Categories are those whose ethnicity was not stated.
- Fall claims are identified by grouping the following accident causes together: 'Slipping, Skidding on Foot', 'Tripping or Stumbling', 'Loss of Consciousness / Sleep' , 'Something Giving way Underfoot', 'Misjudgement of Support', 'Loss Balance / Personal Control'.
- New claims are counted where the accident occurred between 1 January 2018 and 31 December 2022. A claim may be lodged immediately following an accident or at later date.
- Data are displayed in calendar years, i.e. 1 January to 31 December.
- Some accidents may have occurred in this timeframe where the client has not yet lodged a claim, particularly for more recent calendar years. As such we would expect these numbers to change.
- The data was extracted on 8 February 2023 and may differ if extracted again at a later date.
