2020 Proposed Locations of the South East Marine Protected Areas

Locations of the proposed marine reserves (Type 1 marine protected areas (MPAs)) and Type 2 MPAs in the southeast region of the South Island of New Zealand, as consulted on in the 2020 consultation document by the Department of Conservation and Fisheries New Zealand.

The New Zealand government is committed to protecting our valuable marine biodiversity. Work is underway to establish a network of Marine Protected Areas on the south-east coast of the South Island – from Timaru to Waipapa Point.

In February 2018, after nearly four years of work, the South-East Marine Protection Forum (the Forum) provided a recommendations report to the Minister of Conservation and the Minister of Fisheries. In February 2020 a consultation document was released as part of the statutory process to establish marine reserves and type 2 MPAs. This data provides the areas that were included in the 2020 consultation document.
