Wairarapa Building Outlines

This data shows the outline of all buildings located in the Wairarapa districts in the Wellington region as viewed from aerial photography capture in 2013. The processed data was added to preexisting outlines created for flood modelling purposes. Both datasets were used in the Greater Wellington Regional Council topographic base map layers used on Landinfo3 and the Greater Wellington external mapping webmap.

Building outlines were received from the western half of the Wellington region but had not been created for the eastern half. Prior to this data collection, the only sections of the Wairarapa urban areas that had building outlines were Masterton CBD, Masterton Eastside and Westside which had been created by George Harley to use in flood modelling exercises.

Building outlines in Featherston were derived by using the Image Classification tool on 2013 Aerial Imagery from New Zealand Aerial Surveys. Areas classified include vegetation, road & pavement, building and bare earth. Building polygons were extracted and edited to show only the outline of buildings.

The remainder of the outlines were created in ArcGIS Pro by tracing the outline of the buildings as shown in the 2013 Aerial Imagery. The outlines were initially created using the Right Angle Line tool unless the building appeared irregular enough to warrant the use of the standard polygon drawing tool.

The major urban settlements in the Wairarapa were digitised as singular datasets. Once they were completed they were merged into a single dataset. Outlines for well-known rural settlement were added onto the dataset at this stage. The outlines of significant buildings were categorised and named to match schema from the previous work.Outlines were generated for: Masterton, Carterton, Greytown, Featherston, Martinborough, Castlepoint, Riversdale, Flat Point, Mauriceville, Tinui, Lake Ferry, Cape Palliser, Mangatoetoe, Ngawi, South Featherston and Gladstone.Data was created from the 2013 Aerial imagery from New Zealand Aerial Surveys. While all care was taken to ensure the data was captured at an acceptable level of accuracy, visibility of building locations was poor in some cases and features are likely to be misplaced under such conditions. Update of data is needed upon the collection and release of the 2016/2017 Aerial Imagery refly. Outlines will need to be checked against the new imagery and modified to match any changes that have occurred.
