Fault Awareness Areas (FAA): FAA have been developed for areas where the resolution (scale) of mapping is not refined enough to permit the more detailed mapping of a FAZ, or where it has not been established that the mapped feature is of a tectonic (faulting) origin. FAAs are distinct from FAZs and carry no requirements related to the Ministry for the Environment guidelines relating to building type, use and occupancy where new buildings cross active faults. In the future, more work needs to be undertaken by GNS to characterise the activity (or inactivity) of such features.
