Salix (willow) is a genus of about 450–520 species (Wu et al. 2015). It is mostly found in cold and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere in Europe, Asia, and North America. It extends south to central Chile, North Africa, and SE Asia. Diversity is highest in China (275 species, 189 endemic—Fang et al. 1999), the former Soviet Union (135 species—Skvortsov 1999), and North America (113 species—Argus 2010).
